⏩⏩⏩  Igra je zasnovana na jednom od izdanaka opskurnog švedskog sistema stonih RPG igara. Radnja počinje nekoliko godina nakon što je sveopšti nuklearni rat zbrisao čovečanstvo sa lica zemlje i iza sebe ostavio postapokaliptične predele užarene radijacijom. Nekontrolisano zračenje je promenilo površinu planete na dva upečatljiva načina. Sa jedne strane, neobuzdana vegetacija i zelenilo prekrili su planetu neopterećenu ljudskim napastima. Sa druge, raznorazni mutirani humanoidni frikovi i životinje su ubrzo uspostavile novi svetski poredak (odnosno lanac ishrane). Igrač je na čelu tročlanog tima stalkera, mutanata zaduženih za mukotrpno čišćenje postapokaliptičnih zona, i prikupljanje raznoraznog otpada i drugog materijala koji će produžiti životarenje u obližnjoj centralnoj bazi. Sve se iz korena menja kada stalkeri dobiju zadatak da pronađu jednog od nestalih kolega, usput otkrivajući bitne informacije vezane za lokaciju i samo postojanje mitskog utočišta iz podnaslova igre.
